Common causes

Constipation is a common condition in adults that affects twice as many women as men. It is often defined as having two or fewer bowel movements a week. While it is very difficult to identify the exact cause, there are several factors that can contribute.

Lifestyle can play a significant role here, e.g., a lack of fibre in the diet, dehydration, being under- or overweight, or a lack of exercise. Our bathroom habits can also contribute to constipation, for example, ignoring the urge to go or a lack of privacy when using the bathroom. Certain medications can induce symptoms, too. Finally, psychological factors such as stress and anxiety or a change in daily routine can also trigger a bout of constipation.

Constipation do’s

Fortunately, there are some recommendations we can follow when experiencing constipation.

Many begin by increasing their daily intake of fibre in the form of fruits, vegetables, and cereals. Drinking more water is also advisable, as is doing more physical exercise such as walking or jogging. The constipation may affect also the concentration of the intestinal microbiota. Therefore, what may also be recommended is increasing the number of bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract.
